The FA Equality Policy

1. Commitment

  • Football belongs to everyone, and The FA is committed to ensuring it is a sport where people of all backgrounds and abilities feel welcome, respected, and valued.

  • The policy applies to players, coaches, referees, officials, staff, volunteers, and spectators.
     

2. Key Principles

  • No Discrimination: Nobody should face unfair treatment based on:

    • Age

    • Disability

    • Gender reassignment

    • Marriage and civil partnership

    • Pregnancy and maternity

    • Race

    • Religion or belief

    • Sex

    • Sexual orientation

    (These follow the UK Equality Act 2010).

  • Equal Opportunities: Everyone should have the same chance to participate, develop, and succeed in football.

  • Inclusive Environments: Clubs, leagues, and competitions must promote a culture where diversity is celebrated.
     

3. Practical Responsibilities

  • The FA: Must provide leadership, guidance, and monitoring on equality.

  • County FAs, Clubs, Leagues: Must adopt the Equality Policy and embed it in their rules, activities, and behaviours.

  • Coaches & Volunteers: Must promote inclusion, challenge discrimination, and be role models.

  • Referees & Officials: Must uphold fairness and ensure games are played in a respectful environment.
     

4. Disciplinary Action

  • Discriminatory behaviour (on or off the pitch) is treated as serious misconduct.

  • Sanctions may include fines, bans, points deductions, or suspension of club affiliation.

  • Cases are dealt with under The FA’s Disciplinary Regulations.
     

5. Support & Reporting

  • The FA provides support and reporting channels for discrimination or abuse.

  • Incidents can be reported via:

    • Kick It Out (anti-discrimination football organisation)

    • County FA Equality & Diversity Officers

    • The FA reporting system
