Code of Respect
The FA Code of Respect
The FA (Football Association) Code of Respect is part of The FA’s wider Respect programme, which was launched in 2008 to improve standards of behaviour at all levels of football in England. It sets out clear expectations for players, coaches, managers, referees, parents, and spectators to ensure the game is played in a safe, fair, and enjoyable environment.
Here’s a breakdown of the key points of the FA Code of Respect:
1. For Young Players
-
Play for fun, not just to win.
-
Always respect teammates, opponents, referees, and coaches.
-
Be a good sport – accept both victory and defeat gracefully.
-
Work hard for yourself and your team.
-
Listen to your coach and try your best at all times.
2. For Coaches / Team Managers
-
Be a role model: encourage fair play and respect.
-
Place the wellbeing and development of players above winning.
-
Set high standards of behaviour for yourself and your team.
-
Give players equal opportunities to develop.
-
Show respect towards referees, other coaches, and opponents.
3. For Match Officials (Referees)
-
Apply the Laws of the Game fairly and consistently.
-
Communicate with players, coaches, and spectators clearly and respectfully.
-
Be confident and decisive, but approachable.
-
Promote the Respect values at every game.
4. For Parents / Spectators
-
Support and encourage players, never pressure them.
-
Applaud effort, skill, and fair play, not just goals or wins.
-
Never engage in abusive or aggressive behaviour.
-
Respect the referee’s decisions.
-
Remember that children play for fun and personal development.
5. Overall Aims of the Respect Programme
-
Make grassroots football welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.
-
Reduce abusive behaviour toward referees and players.
-
Keep more referees in the game by protecting them from verbal and physical abuse.
-
Create a culture of positivity where football is played in the right spirit.
